I have to tell everyone how impressed I was by all of the students, faculty, staff and community members who came out to support the Aggie football team last weekend during our first home game at Aggie Memorial Stadium. Although the score wasn’t what we were hoping it would be, we showed a great deal of Aggie Pride. We had an enormous amount of fans in attendance, including the largest number of students that we’ve had at a football game since 2006. We have also built momentum when it comes to the number of season ticket holders and our ticket revenue numbers in total. These are all areas where we should be proud. The future of Aggie Athletics is certainly bright.
This past week, I also had an opportunity to meet and engage with a group of new faculty members. I was so impressed with this enormously talented group. These are world-class teachers, researchers and mentors and I am happy to report that our students are in good hands with this group.
This week, I also want to congratulate Monica Torres, our new interim president for Doña Ana Community College. Dr. Torres was the obvious choice to be the interim president for DACC. She knows the campus well, having served as DACC’s vice president for academic affairs since 2014. She has also accomplished a great deal in her time as the college’s chief academic officer and her commitment to student success serves our community well. During her time at the college, she has implemented a number of programs and initiatives to promote enrollment and retention of students. She has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from NMSU and earned a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico in American Studies with an emphasis in Cultural Studies. NMSU’s community college system is an incredibly important part of our mission to serve the state of New Mexico. I’m certain Dr. Torres will do a wonderful job.
