Beginning the Semester

It’s been another busy week at NMSU. Congratulations to everyone who was recognized during our Spring Convocation ceremony on Tuesday. We are fortunate to have such wonderful faculty and staff members at NMSU. Thank you for everything you do for our students and for the communities we serve.

As I’ve mentioned before, we are setting a new course for the NMSU system, in all aspects. I’m seeing a very real and growing “can do” attitude, which is refreshing and a great sign for an organization where the entire enterprise has to be engaged. By working together, we will be able to shape the future of our great university and for the entire state of New Mexico.

This week, I was able to spend some time in Santa Fe, meeting with legislative and other state government leaders. The good news is that the state has more money this year to make investments. That’s important because the needs of our state are many. Still, the Session will be challenging in that the legislators will need to balance many requests. President Floros and I are fortunate to have a great government relations team to help enhance NMSU’s priorities and are well represented in the process. Going forward, our task will be to become less dependent on state appropriations.

I’m excited about the role NMSU can and will play in the state’s efforts to improve education and increase sustainable energy. We plan to work very closely with the governor’s administration to build a plan to reduce the carbon footprint across the state – both public and private. In the area of education, we will be working with the state to advance the cause of public education. Our education pipeline in New Mexico needs help, from kindergarten all the way through to the university level. We need to change the trajectory of our state when it comes to education and intend for NMSU to lead that effort.

As you can tell – NMSU is on the move. This new year holds incredible promise for NMSU and we will work to make sure we take full advantage of these opportunities.

PS - Make sure to check out our new award-winning video below that talks about what our new tagline "BE BOLD. Shape the Future" is all about.
