March Madness

New Mexico’s legislative session will come to a close this weekend. While there is still a lot of activity in Santa Fe, I can report on a few items. Among these is Senate Bill 280, which is on its way to the Governor for signature. It includes more than $30 million in NMSU-related capital outlay for infrastructure improvements across the entire NMSU system, and beyond.

Another bill on its way to the Governor for signature would allow NMSU to continue exploring a potential campus in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. If this campus is realized, it would create a new revenue source for the university, while generating additional opportunities for our students and faculty – all without any capital investments from the university. There are economic development opportunities on this one as well. Other bills are in various stages of completion. A full accounting of all these can be found at:https://govrelations.nmsu.edu/.

I want to thank everyone who has worked so hard on these efforts, including our state legislators. These projects will go far in advancing our efforts to serve our students and the entire state of New Mexico.

March Madness is in full effect for the Aggies in Las Vegas. Our men’s and women’s basketball teams each won in the first round of the WAC Basketball Tournament, which continues today and into the weekend. I’m happy to report a large and vocal contingent of Aggie supporters are here in Las Vegas to cheer on the teams and we’re hopeful we can ride this wave of enthusiasm all the way to the NCAA Tournaments. Good luck to the Aggies.

Our basketball teams aren’t the only student athletes making a splash. The Aggie baseball team is 14-4 and scoring a ton of runs. Nick Gonzales was named player of the month by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association – a huge honor. Additionally, the NM State track and field team took second at the WAC Indoor Championships a couple of weeks ago. This month, the Aggie swimming and diving team also finished in second place at the 2019 WAC Championship. Congratulations to all of our student athletes and our coaches on your success.
