Students, staff and faculty, welcome back! Momentum is picking up for the new semester!
Faculty reported back this week, students move back into residence halls Sunday, Convocation is Tuesday, and classes start Wednesday. Throughout the break, Aggie Athletes have been playing on the road and at home, culminating in last night’s last-minute thrilling win for our Men’s Basketball team over Grand Canyon University. Former Oñate player Johnny McCants sunk an incredible 3-point shot from half court after the buzzer — the result was a win by 2 points and a large pile of ecstatic Aggies on the Pan Am floor!
Now let’s build on the momentum from last night’s game to academic endeavors, and we have many of those queued for the Spring semester. First up: I invite all Aggies to attend Spring Convocation on Tuesday, January 15th in the Atkinson Recital Hall. Refreshments start at 8:15 am and the program begins at 9:00. Spring Convocation will feature comments by NMSU leadership, plus winners of the Donald C. Roush Award for Teaching Excellence, University Research Council recipients for Exceptional Achievements in Creative Scholarly Activity, and the recipient of the award for Excellence in Assessment for Co-Curricular, Administration and Operations. If you cannot join us in person, please join us online.
Administrative matters have also been moving forward since December. Following the retirement of Dean Donna Wagner, Provost Mason interviewed nominees for the Interim Dean of the College of Health and Social Services in mid-December. The strong pool of candidates were from inside and outside the College, and last week, Provost Mason announced that Dr. Sonya Cooper was selected to serve in that capacity. Interim Dean Cooper started this week and has enjoyed a warm welcome from the College.
Additionally, the Search Committee for NMSU’s next Provost has been named. Look for an announcement regarding committee members and the search website in the next few days.
Finally, December saw much activity aimed at developing a draft strategic plan for the NMSU System. The Strategic Planning Core Team met in December to review drafts; the next revision will be presented to the Board of Regents at their January meeting. Following that review, the draft will be distributed broadly to the NMSU community for input.
As always, please send any comments to me at President.Floros@nmsu.edu, and best wishes for a great semester!
Let’s Go Aggies! (Go ahead: watch that shot again)
